Once exhausted, gone forever, and if you tear it down yourself it is equally gone forever.

The best thing to do is stop it before it runs out then refill it from the refills you get from adventures, this will save you the cost of buying another. Learning how to run a high level gold mine so it don't run out is one of the dark arts of the game.
When it comes to Gene pools and shallow ends they can be found at the bar drinking pina colada's
best thing you do with it, wait until you get "Quality Gold Mineshafts" for your geo, search until you get gold deposit with this skill, and put your special gold mine on it, and stop it if its close to end, and refill it, you get tons of refills from adventures, and anyway special gold mine not so much expensive in trade office.

There is 2 types, most of the types will just die, the returnable one is rare, not worth anyway, but still, exist, also, I'm not sure if it ran out it will be destroyed or just return, I think it will be gone.

If I recall correctly the ones which return to star where from the last Xmas event, These ones are bugged as they are not supposed to return to star, I was under the impression BB had fixed them so that they did not return to star.

That was Arctic Mines (iron); not spec.gold mines
