Follow one of the guides on the Wiki page and make sure to complete the side quests in the correct order to continue the fight
this doesn't help at all. when I try to attack, the crossed swords remain "blacked out"

havent done this one but darked out crosses means you cant move till you have completed something else what does the quest say to do usually from looks of it prob make lockpicks and use them maybe hard to tell when no idea where you are in the quest line
