I do not think that the highlighting (during building for example) is server-related. If you have not built anything yet, sending requests to the server would be too non-optimal. I think syncronization happens only after building is confirmed.

But yes, since we cannot fix the client, waiting is the only solution atm.

It's server-related. It doesn't matter if you've built anything or not - the highlighting is output of the blocking algorithm, depending on fresh data from server - eg is deposit found (yet), colls may spawn or generals arrive.
BB do not trust client. (Even harmless UI settings are saved on server-side.)
    Spoiler

Systems you have spent a lot of time and effort to make fail-safe but still need tweaking to reduce obvious bugs..
I'm thinking mostly of the "hard coded" (con-/de-)struction mechanism that you think can be executed from both sides (server and client) with just some map/building blocking restrictions and just letting server override or freeze/lag client whenever it gets heavy loaded.
Then you've added "help systems" that automatically emptying and retrench any excessing generals.
The whole Landing Field/Spot concept is a backward and non-wanted system that you for unknown reasons keep hanging on to.
Why not just keep it simple and avoiding such auto/manual executing conflicts?

There just needs to be a beach head (per player) from which we transfer generals to set up garrison; and a UI that allow us to handle army leading generals without garrison - could be reached from the Tavern (on home island) and a big ship or The Excelsior (on adventure).

Edit: Besides that, there is one rule: Don't trust the client! Would the reason "tons of work, so we decided to invest the resources into events and content" be enough reason to keep sticking to the existing mechanic?

Of course, we do not know technically what's happening, though I doubt it's just change in content but also session handle (on server-side) - like client is quick to timeout chat server calls, game server seems to delay and eventually timeout client calls.
25/11-14 , 23/02-16 .. The end is coming and it will look like this .

As far as I understood, the blocking algorithm works with the zone map (loaded at startup and cached for the session) and with several building space/block maps (most likely built into the client) and do not require additional data exchange.
I think "do not trust client" means that there will be a rollback of any wrong actions if the data on the server is different from the client data. For example, if the building was in a blocked area. Without hidden meanings of this phrase.

Also I see no additional data exchange in fiddler/dev.tools when I select a mine or a field (e.g.) for building (only standard sync 1421b, 780b + 900b when i click the menu), I see only freeze + lags even if I try to move around the map when highlighting is active.

So, my theory still remains that most of the problems are caused by wrong highlighting graphics of island/adventures/colonies "when the game needs to highlight something (construction zone, landing zone, etc.)" maybe there is errors in the pictures or layers, that cause the flash to be unstable, and the flash freezes lead to a lot of bugs that people atm complain about.

As well as the other previous logged comments on lag I am seeing it when you select to build something that isn't on a fixed point like a mine. So trying to build a field ro well that has to check space across the whole island causes - this would support Tempdirz theory to a point, but as I noted I also get this when a quest refreshers

Note playing today, moving generals on an island produces large lag when it's working out free spaces to move the general to, so looks like anything where it needs to work out free spaces is lagging

I am getting short game freezes on my main island. On an adventure freezes and lag when transferring general to another sectre.

Never had it as bad as this before.

the game is a joke, the attitude of the company is a joke... lack of communication, lack of skill, lack of understanding by programmers, there certainly seems to be a total attitude of "we dont care, just buy more gems"... I bet this game will be scrapped and dropped in the "too hard to fix it" basket very soon.

I have just spent the last hour trying to log in, get in, spend 2 minutes (if lucky) game crashes ....rinse and repeat. I am beyond cranky.

I reported a problem with buffs not sticking a couple of years ago and it still happens. For example a I can place 6 steaks and each building will show the correct time outstanding (the same within a second or two) and notice several hours later that one of the buildings is no longer buffed. But the other 5 still are and the clocks are still running properly. I started a thread on this at the time

But that said until recently I rarely had problems. If I did I would have a good clean up of my laptop , a full maintenance and I am up and running again.
My husband who also plays rarely clears his cache , let alone do a full maintenance and has even fewer problems than I have.

BUT the recent updates have created more problems for both of us. He gets a bit of lag when building mines. Everything else is fine.
    I get :-
    lag on adventures,
screen goes dark and have to refresh,
the connection to server lost message,
my screen this morning just goes dark and freezes (The only part that looks normal when this happens are the avatars of guild members across the bottom).
Chat tab freezes and I think no one is talking.
This morning I said good morning to guild members and only THE SERVER replied with a good morning. My husband confirmed I could not be seen in chat.
Guild Avatars disappear and only the lights show.
Some guild members lights do not show and yet they are online.
The Mail Box is slow . Particularly Adventure Invites. But sometimes trades as well.

I recently wrote to all Guild Members asking if they are having issues and roughly 50% so far said none at all or at least nothing that worried them. Others are having some of the same issues as I am having and one member has problems seeing the Guild Guest which he reported and was told it was a known issue. It went at first update but returned during the latest.

My husband and I both have laptops with similar specs and of course the same Internet Provider. We both use Windows 10. He uses Chrome and I use Opera. Chrome also works for me.

    Game doesn't load

Hello, the game does not load since Thursday. There was a problem with the connection on Thursday and I was asked to refresh the page, and then it wouldn't load. I have tried several times at different hours since. The bar loads to about a third and stays there forever. I have tried Chrome (which is my default navigator Version 72.0.3626.109) and Internet Explorer and both doesn't load. My PC has been rebooted. Please tell me if there is something to do or if I just have to wait for a fix. Thanks.

Last annotated status is always the current and continuing status, even if there is no individual feedback every hour.

Currently, the delays have our highest attention and we continue to work on a solution.

    Last feedback is thus still:
We'd like to examine in detail the issues that have been reported to us since the last update before we enable new content. Thank you very much for your patience. We will be providing new information about the event this week, and by then we will have a close look at the game performance. We are still working on it.
    UPDATE 18.02.2019
We deployed a new version on the test server, which includes a possible improvement for the latency.
Please join the testserver on www.tsotesting.com and share your feedback with us.

Believe it or not... resetting my router fixed my recent lag issues. I was having the same major problems doing anything on TSO for over a week (~10 minute login, very poor response when placing mines, sending specialists, buffing buildings, etc). I didn't even want to try adventuring. I tried clearing cache and history, switching browsers, switching computers, no luck. So, at a loss, I tried the old unplug router/plug back in routine and eureka! The game is back to normal for me.

I have no idea why this worked, as my wifi was working fine for non-TSO content before I reset the router. And I doubt it will work for many others considering how widespread this problem currently seems to be. But it may be worth a shot...
