Kills not registering properly

I attacked the last camp on Victor the Vicious with a three wave attack which I had used before so I know it works.
I sent in Gen1. While he was attacking I sent off Gen 2 who arrived before Gen1 attack was complete. This is something I have done many times.
Once Gen1 had lost and was retreating I sent off Gen3. Gen2 lost and retreated before Gen3 arrived.
Then Gen3 LOST as well. What!
Looking at the reports, gen1 made a number of kills before being wiped out.
When Gen 2 started his attack ALL the enemy units were there again. It was as if Gen1 had not made any kills at all.
So gen3 lost as well and I have lost 144 crossbow units and I am not happy. I have had to buy 1200+ crossbows and it is going to take 12 hours to rebuild my attack.

I had a similar prob on VTV. Sent General in, got the fanfare of the general winning but the camp stayed put. Didn't have a battle report email but I had lost a load of recruits. Sent a second attack, this time the camp was destroyed and I finished the adventure. On returning to my island the "dead" recruits were making their way home on the troop transport.
