I doubt a gem mine will be as game-breaking as you predict. Gem production is very slow, it can't be upgraded or buffed.

Yes, in theory the first 20k gems could buy a second mine, but at 4 gems per hour it's going to take a very long time
If at first you don't succeed, sky-diving is not for you.

by the time it is "gamebreaking" i will be long gone- 6 months to get to break even ....

it is about as gamebreaking as gembuying is and as people have stated, you are probably better off buying "specials" like retail packs, bonus sales etc during the same period and have less restrictions on your gem (use)

Fair point, I don't think I'll be investing in one since it takes all that time.

it is slow, i agree with Qualan that most will be gone from the game by the time its gets profitable.

Its a stupid item, anyone that is buying gems and will be here for a year+ may as well buy 1 or two, then its game breaking for them

for everyone else, its just a pie in the sky item that has little point.

    what can you do with 40k gems anyway;
more building licences - do you need lots more?
mine top ups - maybe for gold, but if your working on a auto island anyway you wont be caring about the trade tab (as you will be offline or playing another game while resources build up) and will just use the 300 gold ore mines till they are gone and remake.

    struggling here !!

Praps eventually they'll allow players to buff or upgrade the gem mine.

And the game is still in beta...

What a ridiculous idea to put money on a game where you are beta-tester... doh, i was thinking that beofre playing here.... not you ?

I remember olds days when you get money (or reward) to test beta games.

    My 2 cents.

I think the Gem pricing structure is way too high. As an online gamer for 20 years, I have played all sorts from MMOs, FPS, FTP on consoles and PCs and the pricing with this game is not inline with many of the games on the market. If anything it is making the game look less attractive to many people, hence eventually they will end up killing their own player base as people become more frustrated. Currently I am enjoying the game, but appart from subscriptions and buying a game I have devoutly refused to buy any in-game items as I believe this is an underhand and devisive way of producing a pricing structure. I quit playing farmville for the same reason and will probably reach a critical mass within this game where to progress / enjoy the game as I want to I have to spend more RW money at which point I will quit, which is another reason that I will not buy the retail box. If the devs had been more up-front and either required micro-transactions or a small monthly sub, I'd quite happily pay that, but within this game, to purchase items of worth costs more than the retail price of this or many games (including the overpriced XBox games - and everyone knows that they are overpriced that is why many are discounted on launch). I wish BB every success with the game, but whilst they have their head jammed up their a$$ on their gems pricing structure, I can see that they are very unlikely to make significant returns on their investment.

Ubisoft are a business so their job is to extract as much profit from this game as possible without leaving their customers feeling so fleeced that they will not come back or try the next Ubisoft product. In that respect I believe they priced most of the early items correctly since you didn't need them during the tutorial period but many players who enjoyed reaching level 20 found it worthwhile investing a little money to keep playing, and some players bought a lot of items. That seemed to buck the common trend of 98% of players of a "free to play" game refusing to buy anything. The settlers starter pack continued that trend - it's sold out in all the online retailers I know, suggesting that its popularity has completely outstripped their expectations. Well done Ubisoft, you got it right and reaped a nice return.

The most recent items have changed that trend significantly. Had I not obtained a Veteran with eggs I would have felt unable to justify spending the entire value of a retail game on just a single pixel person in TSO. Likewise the cost of the forthcoming mines seems truly fantastic, genuinely unachievable for anyone except the richest and of very little practical use - why buy a 20,000 gem building that will not make a single gem profit for 6 months? You could use far fewer gems to buy vast quantities of anything you wanted from the marketplace within days. It seems there is a new attitude at the company, swapping steady returns for maximum short term gain. Perhaps the company is really hurting for money and cannot afford to think long term? From a customer point of view it's a great shame.
